Discarding Excess Medical Supplies

Before discarding excess medical equipment, consider donating.  The NCOA Adviser article has fundamental info for responsibly donating used medical equipment.

If you decide to discard any medical equipment, check to see if the equipment has any recyclable components.

Disposing of Prescription Medicines

Read The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendations for drug and prescription disposal. Don’t miss the article’s section, “Do’s and don’ts of medication disposal” which so many families have questions about how to do properly.

Sell Used Medical Equipment

It may not be something you initially think of but there are channels to sell used medical equipment. Do be careful, items that require a prescription, like a CPAP machine cannot be sold.  However Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Craigslist are all options for liquidating property of the estate including used medical equipment.

All States MED is a private buyer and reseller of used medical equipment to be aware of.  http://allstatesmed.com

Donation of major medical equipment

The article provides a list of resources that offer 2nd use donation destinations for Durable Medical Equipment (DME): bath safety devices, privacy screens, hospital beds, lifts, crutches, mobility aids, canes, walkers, manual and power wheelchairs, scooters, and oxygen equipment.

Donation locations for surplus medical supplies such as adult diapers, catheters, bandages, syringes, and other items are also listed.

You will find many organizations that share Executorium’s commitment to reusing Personal Medical Equipment and Supplies.  This includes our friends at Project C.U.R.E. who collect and ship medical equipment to under-resourced organizations in developing countries.  Other organizations that accept durable medical equipment are found in our article, Guide to Donation of Personal Medical Equipment.
