There are Facebook Groups for everything. This is especially true for collections and unique items that may be in an estate’s inventory of personal property. More general groups may help you identify an item, and from there, more specific groups may help get more info, perhaps date, model number, or even a sense of an item’s desirability. We look at such groups as a great starting point for leads and subsequently, verifiable information. We encourage using these groups only as one of several sources of info, and to verify any information. Of course, no Facebook group chatter is reliable, or a substitute for a USPAP appraisal.
An estate’s personal property inventory can be large or small of course. All estates are different. But a little education goes a long way if you’ve got a collection of artworks, Steiff animals, or a couple of 1975 McDonaldland glasses. You might have seen these items your entire life but only had to recon their potential value in your role as an executor. An executor’s role as the estate’s fiduciary is to realize the value of the estate assets on behalf of the beneficiaries. Facebook Groups may help.
A word of caution that selling via these groups is the wild west and that people are very often not what they seem. Proceeding with the caveat that “people are not what they seem” is a good basis for self-protection. Therefore, “caveat venditor” always. When it comes to determining a real value for an item of personal property in an estate, you will need a professional appraisal. The appraisal standard is the USPAP Guidelines governed by the Appraisal Foundation. This organization is mandated by Congress to establish standards for the appraisal of personal and real property. Members of AI and their sponsoring organizations follow these guidelines to meet the criteria of USPAP to determine the market value of personal and real property.
